My experience in writing novels can be said to be quite long—I published my first story back in 1940. Before the liberation, I published a collection, but it was later interrupted for a long time. After the liberation, I worked as an editor for a considerable period. I edited Beijing Literature, Sing and Dance, and Minzu Literature. It wasn’t until the early 1960s that I occasionally wrote a few novels. After that, I stopped writing and turned to playwriting, with a gap of over twenty years. It wasn’t until 1979 that, with the encouragement, support, and even some scolding from some comrades—specifically a few old friends in Beijing, especially Lin Jinlan and Deng Youmei—I finally started writing again.
The third time I picked up writing was relatively late. This was because I had been away from literary work for a long time, and even now, my position is still within the theater troupe.
