Ten Lectures on Chinese Universities

Author: Chen Pingyuan
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2002-10-01
Features: The ten selected articles on universities include three newly written pieces from the past two years——《Capital Migration and the Fate of Universities》, 《The Modern Transformation of Traditional Academies》, and 《Academic Lectures and Vernacular Writings)—which have never been collected before. The remaining seven articles are selected from five previously published books of mine. As for the slight separation into two parts—one for essays and the other for sketches—the purpose is to distinguish the formats: the essays use footnotes to elaborate in detail, catering to researchers for reference; the sketches employ inline annotations (the titles in the annotations, except those specially noted, can be found in the books I have ordered or reviewed), with the principle of hindering reading as the guiding rule. It is well-known that saying "it's as if I haven't said anything" is pointless. As an ordinary teacher, persistently focusing on the fate of universities is precisely living up to the old saying: "Though my position is humble, I dare not forget my nation's concerns." Regrettably, with limited knowledge, my writings are scarce, and what is selected amounts to this slim volume.
