Mainstream literature of Taiwan and Hong Kong

Author: Tian Ruisheng

内容简介:
The title of this book once caused me some difficulty. Should I call it "History of Taiwan and Hong Kong Literature"? No, because it lacks the comprehensiveness of a historical account. Should I call it "Research on Taiwan and Hong Kong Literature"? No, because such superficial text hardly qualifies as research. Later, while browsing a bookshelf, I came across Brandes' extensive work, The Main Currents of Nineteenth-Century Literature, and the word "mainstream" sparked my interest. My idea was to follow a historical thread, focusing on introducing and discussing the most important literary trends and writers from Taiwan and Hong Kong. So, I decided to adopt "mainstream" directly. After all, Brandes is dead, and even if he were alive, he wouldn’t stoop to critique me. Famous people are very吝啬, and they don’t often give others a chance to gain recognition.
Considering the difficulty readers may face in finding works from Taiwan and Hong Kong, this book generally includes a representative work after introducing each author. Due to length constraints, the selected works are mostly short stories, while longer novels are summarized. While a single work cannot fully represent an author, it can at least offer a glimpse. It should also be noted that since Taiwanese literature has achieved greater accomplishments than Hong Kong literature, this book is slightly skewed in length. Readers may find it unbalanced, but that is how it must be.
