Features: The National English Proficiency Test (NEPT) consists of five levels. Level 1 is the preliminary level, and Level 2 is an adjunct to Level 1, with slightly lower requirements than Level 1. It places greater emphasis on oral communication and basic daily interaction, making it suitable for widespread promotion of everyday English usage. To meet the training and learning needs of Level 1 candidates, the National Education Examination Center has compiled this textbook based on the requirements of the Level 1 exam syllabus. Starting from the practical needs of candidates' English usage and the realities of language learning, the textbook adopts a pragmatic approach—“what is not done enables what is done.” It seeks the optimal balance between breadth and depth, ensuring that the material covers a wide range of topics but remains at a shallow level of communication, focusing on enabling candidates to handle simple interactions in relevant areas. To this end, the textbook includes 16 communication topics, with dialogues and short passages using only about 600 words and phrases. Each communication topic forms a unit. Each unit includes: 1. Dialogues; 2. Short passages; 3. Words and phrases; 4. Notes; 5. Exercises. Two special notes: 1. Pronunciation: Considering the varying proficiency levels of learners, the main body of this textbook does not include pronunciation teaching and practice. The purpose of the phonetic chart in the appendix is to encourage teachers to teach flexibly and supplement the material as needed. 2. Grammar: The textbook focuses primarily on developing learners' language communication skills and does not include grammar teaching and practice in the main body. However, basic grammar knowledge remains essential in the process of cultivating communicative language skills. Therefore, a brief table of fundamental grammar items is included in the appendix for reference by teachers and learners.
