Features: Chairman Arafat truly embodied the Palestinian spirit. He had the courage to accept the reality of two states, Palestine and Israel, living in peace together, and he also signed the Oslo Accords. Yasser Arafat was the founder of the Palestinian National Liberation Movement, an outstanding national leader, and an important historical figure of the 20th century. It was under his leadership that the Palestinian national liberation struggle became one of the most closely watched major events in international politics. To recognize Arafat's contributions to peace, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) awarded him the "Bhagat Singh Peace Prize" in September 1993. In 1994, he was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for that year with Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Foreign Minister Shimon Peres.
