Features: With the continuous improvement of people's living standards, obesity has become a very common social phenomenon. Obesity is not a state but a disease, a malnutrition-related illness prevalent among those with better living conditions. It is caused by nutritional excess rather than deficiency. Obesity robs our youth of slender figures, leaving us yearning for beautiful clothes in vain; it makes us constantly worry about the onset of diseases such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, hypertension, heart disease, gout, and fatty liver disease. Faced with delicious food, we cannot indulge freely, restricting our freedom of movement in daily life. It also reduces our reaction, immunity, and tolerance. The experience of developed countries proves that the period when a country transitions from poverty to wealth is a peak time for the onset of obesity. China is currently in this period, and obesity is gradually becoming widespread. Obesity has become one of the serious threats to the health of the Chinese people, making the understanding, prevention, control, and treatment of obesity a critical issue of concern for the medical community and the general public.
Obesity, also known as obesity disease (Obesity), is a disease caused by excessive fat accumulation in the human body. When caloric intake exceeds the body's expenditure and is stored as fat, exceeding the standard body weight by more than 20% or having a body mass index (BMI) greater than 24, it is classified as obesity. If there is no obvious cause, it is called simple obesity; if there is a clear cause, it is called secondary obesity. This condition can occur in children, middle-aged, and elderly individuals. Excessive eating and insufficient exercise disrupt the balance between energy intake and expenditure, leading to the storage of excess energy as fat. This increases body fat and promotes the proliferation of fat tissue, making obesity more likely to develop.
Based on pathogenesis and etiology, obesity can be divided into two major categories: simple and secondary obesity. Simple obesity is the most common form of obesity and is a risk factor for various serious health-threatening diseases (such as diabetes, coronary atherosclerotic heart disease, cerebrovascular diseases, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, etc.). It plays a role in the onset of these diseases as either a cause, an inducement, an exacerbating factor, or a combination of these.
