★Editor-in-Chief: Wei Hongyuan, Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at Nankai University, who has long been dedicated to teaching and researching modern Chinese history. He has served as a member of the second and third sessions of the Academic Evaluation Group of the State Council Commission on Graduate Education, as well as the Director of the Department of History at Nankai University. His academic works include Sun Yat-sen's Chronology, Draft of Modern Chinese History, History of the Anti-Japanese Base Areas in East China, War of Resistance Against Japan and Chinese Society, and Financial and Economic History of the Caoji Base Area et al.
The book covers history from the founding of the Republic of China in 1912 to the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, with occasional extensions upward or downward as needed. The chronology before the founding of the Republic of China uses the Qing dynasty's era names with corresponding Gregorian dates appended, while after its founding, Gregorian dates are used. The narrative follows the historical evolution of the Republic of China. For other regimes, the term "feudal regime" is employed; for collaborationist regimes during the War of Resistance Against Japan, the term "puppet regime" is used.
The writing style largely follows the traditional Annals of Events format, covering all aspects such as politics, diplomacy, military, legal system, economy, culture, education, science and technology, arts, sports, and social life, with selective inclusion based on the significance of events. Detailed footnotes are provided to indicate the sources of the information. Political terms and party designations in the cited materials are retained as they appear, requiring discernment from the reader.
The book strives for completeness in its accounts. Adhering to the principle of inclusivity, when encountering differing views or historical materials, generally one perspective or source is adopted, or they are included in footnotes for future reference. The events are arranged primarily in chronological order. Names in the book are presented in their original forms, avoiding titles or courtesy names as much as possible. However, in quoted passages, names are retained as they appear, and references to a person's position are based on the circumstances at the time.
The book is substantial in scope and covers a wide range of topics. The chief editor, after thoroughly reviewing the entire volume, also fully respects the academic viewpoints of the contributors to each part, in line with the principles of academic revision.
