Features: This book is a long novel written by Jane Austen (1775—1817), a 19th-century British female writer. During Austen's time, there was a social gap between the aristocratic and middle classes in England, caused by economic disparities. The author focuses on the love stories of several daughters of Mr. Bennet, a farmer in the middle class. The eldest daughter, Jane, is gentle, kind, and beautiful, and falls in love at first sight with the weak-minded wealthy young man Bingley. However, Bingley's sisters and friend Darcy look down on Mrs. Bennet's foolishness and the ignorance of Jane's younger sisters, thereby hindering the relationship. The second daughter, Elizabeth, is intelligent, graceful, ambitious, and has her own opinions. She meets Darcy, a wealthy aristocratic young man. Darcy is introverted, aloof, and proud, and initially treats Elizabeth poorly. Elizabeth, in turn, does not deliberately cater to Darcy, showing her independent and stubborn personality. This independence catches Darcy's attention, leading to admiration, but his second proposal of love is rejected. Later, Darcy discovers Elizabeth's valuable qualities of not seeking wealth and pursuing true love, which completely breaks down his pride and wins Elizabeth's heart. Meanwhile, Bingley receives his friend's support and reunites with Jane, and the two couples, after enduring a series of twists and turns, overcome class barriers and other obstacles to finally marry. The book also depicts the frivolous third daughter of the Bennet family, Lydia, who actively pursues the handsome but immoral and financially irresponsible officer Wickham. After eloping with him, she marries him, ultimately leading to a failed marriage. Through this novel, readers can understand the class prejudices and social dynamics in the upper and middle classes of early 19th-century England in terms of marriage, as well as how the author portrays true love as being able to transcend class conflicts, eliminate arrogance, and eliminate prejudice, achieving the ideal of a perfect marriage.
