Author: (British) Austen; Li Ming Rewritten
Publisher:
Publication Date: 2002-06-01
Features: The story concludes with a happy ending, and readers can also learn from it that emotional decisions cannot solve any problems. When one possesses abundance, they must also possess reason, and when necessary, emotions should be restrained by reason. While focusing on the portrayal of the main characters, the author also uses vivid and concise language to sketch several distinctive secondary characters, such as the joking yet warm-hearted Mrs. Jennings, the stingy and selfish Mr. and Mrs. Dashwood, the cunning and self-satisfied Lucy, and others. These lifelike supporting characters greatly enhance the work. The two female protagonists, Elinor and Marianne, are sisters who hold completely opposite views on the aforementioned issues. Elinor, the older sister, is a very rational young woman but is not lacking in strong emotions; Marianne, on the other hand, is highly emotional in her dealings and sometimes lacks composure. As a result, Marianne inevitably suffers some setbacks in matters of the heart. Fortunately, she awakens in time after being deceived by the playboy Winthrop and suddenly realizes that the person who truly loves her is the colonel who has been waiting faithfully by her side, Colonel Brandon. Elinor, with her tenacious character and dignified attitude, ultimately wins the love of Edward.
