In 1987, a book titled The Spy Catcher by a former British MI5 intelligence officer caused a sensation in Western society, and China Central Television reported on it in the News Broadcast. As a result, the domestic publishing industry was inspired, scholars and translators worked tirelessly to search for publishing information, and relevant publishers did their utmost to seize publishing opportunities. However, it was the unknown Wang Maimai who emerged victorious from the crowd, signing a contract with Yangtze Literature Publishing House. With his debut, he achieved a triumph, and the publisher sold nearly 100,000 copies of Wang Maimai's translation of The Spy Catcher in its first edition. The winning momentum carried on, and in the following years, Wang Maimai's translations of works such as Royal Sisters, Midnight Thoughts, Nancy Reagan's Memoirs, and The Unpublished Works of Mark Twain were published, each becoming bestsellers.
After 1990, due to teaching responsibilities, Wang Maimai began to compile college English textbooks and teaching materials for the CET-4 and CET-6 exams. From then on, small and large bookstores near universities across the country continuously introduced best-selling Wang Maimai English books. Like a sudden spring breeze, a thousand trees burst into blossoms. Wang Maimai English dominated the domestic college English supplementary book market, practically leading the trend for over a decade. Today, the Wang Maimai English series has hundreds of titles, covering a wide range of subjects from middle school to university and postgraduate studies. Its brand has gained increasing popularity among readers due to its exceptionally clear explanations of textbook difficulties and its accurate grasp of exam trends. Surveys show that many college and high school students across the country own Wang Maimai brand books, with almost everyone having at least one. The extent of its popularity is evident.
Learning English well and mastering the skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation are the goals of English teaching. However, building the grand structure of the English language, vocabulary remains the foundation. Without a solid vocabulary foundation, how can one discuss listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation skills? The importance of vocabulary is self-evident. But how can one lay a strong vocabulary foundation? What are the best ways to approach it to achieve satisfying results? Based on a decade of teaching experience and our own experiences in learning English, we believe the best approach is as follows:
1. Strictly follow the syllabus requirements and strive to memorize all the vocabulary. You can look at the definitions, cover the words, and read or write them one by one, then reverse the process—looking at the words and covering the definitions to state their exact meanings—until you achieve a reasonable accuracy and proficiency.
2. When memorizing words, avoid rote memorization. Instead, try to summarize as many memory techniques as possible, such as associating synonyms and antonyms, using prefix and suffix word-building methods, and comparing similar-looking or sound-alike words with different meanings, to improve the quality and efficiency of your memory.
3. English has many words with strong word-formation capabilities. These word groups built around core words are often key exam points. For these points, we must carefully analyze and try to summarize answer patterns.
4. To save students valuable time, we have provided typical exam questions for key vocabulary, some of which are classic questions from past middle school exams, while others are predictions of future exam questions.
5. When taking exams, even for a single vocabulary question, it is advisable to analyze the question type beforehand and grasp the examiners' intentions from a macro perspective before answering. This book provides detailed question analyses for each typical question, aiming to offer students some insights in this regard.
6. In English, many words that are synonyms or near-synonyms in Chinese cannot be replaced in specific English contexts. To help students master these challenging words, we have provided word meaning distinctions, allowing students to understand not only what but also why.
7. Another major feature of this book is the detailed solutions to many typical exam questions, tailored to meet the needs of students at various levels, especially those with weaker foundations.
