Professor Zou Yilin, born on August 31, 1935, in Shanghai, has ancestral roots in Ningbo, Zhejiang. In 1956, he graduated from the History Department of Shandong University. That same autumn, he was assigned to the Institute of the History of Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences as a trainee researcher. In early 1957, he joined Professor Tan Qixiang in Shanghai to participate in the compilation of the Historical Atlas of China. In 1962, he transferred to the History Department of Fudan University as an assistant teacher and became a lecturer in 1978. In 1980, he was promoted to associate professor. In 1982, he became the deputy director of the Institute of Historical Geography at Fudan University. In 1984, the State Education Commission specially appointed him as a professor and doctoral supervisor. In 1986, he became the director of the Institute of Historical Geography at Fudan University. In 1996, he resigned from the directorship of the institute and was concurrently appointed as the director of the Postdoctoral Program in History and the chief professor at Fudan University. In 1998, he was reappointed as the chief professor.
