Features: I am already tired of and skeptical about the worldly men and women, so I wrote another love story between a soul and a mortal, or perhaps in absurdity, there is eternity. — Xi Lingxue
Black. Blind-like black. The black of a primordial world, chaos yet unopened. In the darkness, many voices overlap: the wind crying "whoo-whooo," the river murmuring sorrowfully, the sound of little ghosts whipping their whips to drive away spirits, the chirping of crickets, the chirping of birds. Far away, there is a fierce scream, like a wolf but also like a tiger—unknown what beast it is, perhaps a human. Wuyan suddenly realizes, that was indeed a human, a scream of someone in extreme pain. Some people were more cruel than beasts in life, and some were more tormented than beasts after death—this is the cry of humans who have been tortured in purgatory and can no longer bear the pain. So many flower souls and bird souls, blooming with sparse shadows slanting across, drifting with a faint fragrance after death. Wuyan walks along the riverbank, following the fragrance of dead roses, listening to the wailing of the cuckoo's soul, yet she sees no light. She has long been accustomed to seeing nothing, feeling nothing amiss—she was blind all her life.
