Features: The book has the following characteristics: First, its purpose is clear. The author's general theory is based on removing the linguistic and textual barriers of ancient literature. The author analyzes the causes of reading difficulties from three linguistic and textual units, or three levels, and summarizes reading difficulties into eight categories. Then, chapters are established around how to overcome these obstacles. Second, the approach is clear. Lexicography has long been subordinate to classical studies and involves the interpretation of meaning. Its content is overly specific and extensive, entangled with literary studies, phonology, and the study of function words, which should belong to grammar, and needs to be clarified. The author has a very accurate grasp of the essence of lexicography, focusing closely on semantic interpretation and staying true to ancient texts everywhere, making the original content of lexicography clear and concise. Third, the author is skilled at guiding. The author skillfully uses modern language and the perspective of modern people to discuss ancient issues. Especially in Chapter 5, the author discusses the annotations of textual interpretation, selecting four samples of ancient annotations; in Chapter 6, the author discusses specialized works on semantic interpretation, selecting four ancient specialized books; and in Chapter 7, the author discusses notes on short essays and textual interpretation, selecting nine notes from scholars specializing in textual research. Introducing the ancients while integrating his own understanding is indeed a good method for guiding learners to engage with lexicographical materials and learn lexicography.
