Features: The essay has a long history both in China and abroad. In ancient China, many of the arguments by the pre-Qin philosophers were witty and vivid, serving as excellent essays. In foreign countries, one can trace it back to ancient Greece and Rome, where philosophers and social activists enjoyed publishing dialogues and, many of which were unique and brilliant essays. In China, the essay flourished and reached its peak in the two or three decades after the birth of the May Fourth New Literature Movement, with Lu Xun being widely recognized as the most outstanding contributor. The essay was so brilliant and vibrant during that historical period, like a blossoming garden in full bloom, due to multiple factors. It emerged and actively participated in the turbulent times, which was the social reason why the excellent essays of that era were so captivating. Here, I will not mention anything else but focus on another important reason that contributed to the rapid development of essays in China: the influence of foreign essays, and a brief discussion about foreign essays. The authors selected for this book come from over thirty countries. Various ideologies, styles, and flavors are presented, showcasing a colorful and diverse spectrum. We have strived to be as diverse and inclusive as possible. We hope that these diverse and exquisite essays will bring readers joy and contribute to the health of their minds.
