Features: This book is a set of lecture notes prepared by more than ten key members of the Grand Secretariat and Hanlin Academy during the of the Ming Dynasty, including Gao Yi, Zhang Sifui, Yu Youting, Chen Dong, Tao Jingbang, He Luowen, Shen Li, and others. Starting from the second half of the 6th year of the Longqing reign (1562), they conducted daily lectures to the young emperor Wanshi, explaining the Zizhi Tongjian and presenting it for reading. Later, Zhang Juzheng compiled and edited these notes, resulting in four volumes. Zhang Juzheng selected important excerpts from the Zizhi Tongjian and provided clear and insightful explanations. On one hand, he aimed to teach the young emperor about the long-standing virtuous moral qualities and excellent traditions of traditional Chinese ethics. On the other hand, he focused on explaining various historical reforms, summarizing the lessons from the rise and fall of past dynasties, tailored to the political and social characteristics of the Ming Dynasty at the time. Additionally, Zhang Juzheng offered his own unique insights on statecraft strategies and historical issues.
