Features: Among the young scholars in the field of Wei-Jin and Southern and Northern Dynasties studies, Yongping's diligence, steadiness, keenness, and sensitivity are widely recognized by many middle-aged and elderly scholars, as well as deeply admired by peers like myself. Due to his diligence, Yongping gained prominence in academia by his thirties, earned his Ph.D. in history from Nanjing University while working, and over a decade of dedicated effort has yielded abundant results—two monographs and numerous papers. Sometimes when I see Yongping, I jokingly say, "Brother, give me a break, I can't keep up with digesting all this!" Despite the jest, whenever I encounter his articles, I still make time to read them because they are worth it, offering insights, inspiration, and even surprises. This is because Yongping's writings are grounded and free of empty rhetoric, well-supported by solid research, insightful, and thought-provoking. What I particularly appreciate is his profound understanding of historical figures and events! I often marvel that with Yongping's refined temperament, humanistic nature, social concern, strong cultural mission, and high academic responsibility, his research on the social, intellectual, cultural, and political history of the Han, Wei, and Six Dynasties truly aligns perfectly. No wonder his works resonate so deeply—he places himself in that era, and he approaches his scholarship with heart! Immersed in the time of his research and seeking a connection through "the emotional in the depths of his soul," Yongping's Research on the Family Traditions and Family Studies of the Eastern Jiangdong Aristocratic Clans During the Six Dynasties (Jiangsu Ancient Books Publishing House, January 2003 edition) is a prime example. I remember reading this 300,000-word work while sitting or lying down a couple of summers ago, jotting down notes for a book review. Those were unforgettable days. The weather was rather stuffy then, and I was always sensitive to air conditioning, but savoring Yongping's great work brought me a rare sense of coolness in my heart: just like the captivating family traditions and family studies of the Eastern Jiangdong aristocratic clans during the Six Dynasties, his book is filled with understanding, care, sympathy, contemplation, and wisdom! Reading such a uniquely charming work is, at least for me, a spiritual delight. In today's society, the aristocratic Six Dynasties era, long forgotten by the masses, is a world where figures like Yongping and I, though materially "declined" yet spiritually "aristocratic," can deeply understand and care about it, evoking special empathy and contemplation. Perhaps our enduring focus on that distant era stems from cherishing such rare feelings. In ancient societies where communication, transportation, and other information means were far less advanced, the dissemination of academic culture was primarily achieved through scholars directly. They always carried a strong cultural consciousness, consciously taking on the responsibility of inheritance. This determined their irreplaceable role in cultural exchange and transformation. Every page of the integration and development of Chinese academic culture is steeped in their hard work. However, their destinies were often tied to the broader social environment, closely linked to the cultural refinement and policies of rulers, making their paths always arduous, full of twists and thorns. This book, by examining the mobility of scholars and cultural exchange between Jianghuai during the Middle Ages, vividly portrays just such a picture, one both lively and tinged with sorrow.
