—Advised by Zhou Wenzhen, life depends on nutrition. Since the existence of organisms, life and its continuation have been inseparable from dietary nutrition. Ancient wisdom recognized this truth, noting that "food ensures prosperity, while starvation brings peril," highlighting its importance. Thus, the saying "food is the foundation of life" emerged. Modern science further recognizes that the imbalance of nutrients is a major cause of many diseases. Insufficient or lack of nutrition can lead to anemia, rickets, dementia, goiter, blindness, osteoporosis, and congenital deformities, while excessive nutrition can result in "diseases of affluence," such as obesity, atherosclerosis, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, coronary heart disease, and diabetes. Mild cases affect health and reduce quality of life, while severe cases threaten life. With China’s economic development and rising living standards, the aforementioned nutritional imbalances have become increasingly prominent, making nutrition and health a greater focus. In response, the Chinese Nutrition Society formulated the "Dietary Guidelines for Chinese Residents" in 1997, based on scientific research and addressing the nutritional needs and dietary deficiencies of the Chinese population, offering universal guidance.
The significance of this series lies in further popularizing scientific knowledge of nutrition and health, enabling the general public to master balanced diets for strengthening the body, extending life, and improving national quality. The content is divided into two parts: one focuses on how nutrition prevents and treats common diseases, while the other explores the relationship between dietary nutrition and different life stages. The contributors are all professionals with long-term experience in clinical, teaching, and research in nutrition. Through their daily work, they have gained deep insights and practical expertise in handling the relationship between nutrition and health. Therefore, the series is written in an accessible, practical, and easy-to-understand manner, facilitating implementation. We hope readers will gain extensive nutritional knowledge and apply it in daily life, contributing to disease prevention, fitness, and strengthening the body for a faster journey toward a well-off society!
