Traditional "feng shui" is almost omnipresent in China's architectural site selection, planning, and design. This ancient doctrine is rich in the philosophical, aesthetic, geological, geographical, ecological, and landscape aspects of ancient Chinese thought, and includes extensive discussions on how humans should adapt to nature. The term "feng shui" encompasses a naive cosmology, natural philosophy, and environmental philosophy formed during human activities of traveling and construction. It emphasizes the combination of wind and water in nature with other elements of traditional Chinese philosophy, such as "qi" and "yin-yang."
The fundamental orientation of feng shui theory pays special attention to the relationship between humans and the environment, which aligns closely with the traditional Chinese cosmology of "harmony between heaven and humanity." Feng shui emphasizes harmony between humans and nature, advocating that "where people reside, they should take the earth and mountains as the main focus." In other words, humans must follow the "way of heaven" and base themselves on nature. Only by choosing a suitable natural environment can humans view the earth as a living, spiritual organism. The interconnectedness and mutual coordination among its parts are both the core of feng shui thought and the essence of Eastern philosophy.
