Features: This book, crafted by numerous scholars over two years, selects 100 events that have influenced world history. It provides detailed interpretations and in-depth reflections, aiming to help readers find methods of thinking and wisdom for survival from the mysteries of history. By learning from history, one can understand the rise and fall of civilizations. History is like life, with only a few critical moments. This book simplifies the complexities, offering profound insights that benefit readers for a lifetime. The long river of history is not a calm surface; despite decades or even centuries of mediocre eras, great waves and storms always emerge after periods of tranquility, creating vibrant ripples and even altering original paths. It is these waves that make human history lively, not a stagnant pool. These waves form the 100 events discussed in this book that have shaped the course of Chinese history.
The great city of Rome was not built in a day, but it was destroyed almost overnight. The fall of Rome ended a magnificent civilization and ushered in the long European Middle Ages. For the river of history, Rome's collapse was like a brilliant wave, though bitter, it ultimately changed the course of history, leaving later generations to sigh in reflection. Such events are numerous in human progress, teaching us that history is sentient, not rigidly bound by rules, but the living history of real people. They also teach us that we cannot devote equal effort to every segment of history. Like life, the key lies in a few critical steps, and the success or failure of these steps determines a person's fate for a long time to come. Similarly, the direction history takes at critical moments also determines the fate of many, even the entire human race, for centuries or even millennia. For this reason, we must reflect on Chinese history—and this reflection will be beneficial—to examine its critical moments. Thus, this book was created.
China is an ancient civilization with a long history. Over this vast expanse of time, kings, generals, scholars, and ordinary people, like the sands of the Ganges, have written the story of China. However, historical development has never been balanced. Some eras were mediocre, while others were times of great upheaval and brilliance. Some periods saw economic prosperity but intellectual stagnation, while others witnessed cultural flourishing amid national decline. The 100 Events That Shaped China selects the 100 most influential events from countless historical moments, painting a grand and tumultuous picture of China's past.
Sometimes, history seems to play tricks on people. Events once considered important later become trivial and meaningless. For example, dynasties throughout history regarded the Five Elements and Ritual Records in revised histories as significant political and cultural acts. On the other hand, things once deemed foolish or were later discovered to hold great importance. Take the famous traveler Xu Xiake, for instance. Many considered him a vagrant in his time, but centuries later, Ding Wenjiang hailed him as China's greatest traveler. As the renowned Italian historian Benedetto Croce said, "All history is contemporary history." History is always changing, shaped by the development of the times, people's understanding, or even the benevolent or malevolent interpretations of later generations. We strive not to judge events but to explore their historical significance. This book maintains a fair attitude toward the past, describing major events that influenced Chinese history on this basis.
Many events that shaped human history are epic tales of heroes. Why? People are political animals, and war is an extension of politics. Often, turning points in history are achieved through bloodshed, bayonets, cannons, conspiracies, and calculations. In this self-destructive struggle, the "heroes" humans create and worship treat the world as a chessboard, the people as pawns, and the nation as a gamble, fighting against one another. Countless wars in Chinese history have brought great changes. Many turning points in history were marked by war, such as the An Lushan Rebellion and the Opium War.
While events that shaped human history are closely tied to politics, war, and revolution, it should be noted that not all events that influence human fate are the result of the machinations of emperors and ministers. Sometimes, the invention of a tool or the innovation of a technology can change the course of human destiny. For example, the invention of paper was crucial to the continuity and development of human civilization, and the invention of gunpowder greatly advanced historical progress. Additionally, cultural phenomena have also influenced historical development. For instance, the imperial examination system, which lasted a thousand years in China, and the phenomenon of literary purges in Chinese history had profound effects on politics, society, thought, and academia.
Human history, so far, has been only a fleeting moment in the life of the universe. Compared to cosmic existence, it is insignificant. Yet, humans are great. On this small planet, they have created magnificent civilizations and history. We look back to honor the past—not only the great figures of great eras but also the ordinary people who silently contributed to human progress. Beyond honoring the past, we also aim to inspire ourselves to contribute to the advancement of human civilization. At the same time, we hope to draw meaningful conclusions about human destiny from these events. This is the purpose of this book. Thank you.
