Features: Yi Huichun, styled Beiren, styled Zicao, was born in 1940 in Dandong, Liaoning, with ancestral roots in Penglai, Shandong. He graduated from the Normal College of Art in 1961 and from the Chinese Painting Research Institute in 1988, where he studied landscape painting under He Haixia. He is one of the representative painters of the Guandong Painting School and holds the title of Associate Research Librarian. Currently, he serves as the Director of the Landscape Painting Studio at the Xu Beihong Art Institute of China, Executive Director of the Liaoning Chinese Painting Institute, and Vice President of the Chinese Famous Person Painting and Calligraphy Institute.
Throughout his fifty-year artistic career, the painter has been relentless in his pursuit of art. Building on a foundation of observing nature, understanding tradition, and cultivating personal, his works are deeply emotional yet unconstrained, blending grandeur and elegance. His creations are full of vitality, profound craftsmanship, and pure charm, showcasing an independent style that has garnered widespread attention and praise from predecessors such as Li Keran and Zhang Ding. He has held exhibitions in cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang, Dalian, Hefei, Shantou, Fushun, and Fuzhou, as well as in Japan and other countries.
In 1990, the painter taught alongside Huang Runhua and Yao Zhihua, the heads of the Chinese Painting Department at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, and Zhang Renzhi of the Beijing Art Institute at the Huangshan Landscape Painting Institute. They created over 100 works based on scenes in Huangshan, and in 1991, an exhibition titled "Huangshan Landscape Painting" was held in Hefei, attracting significant attention. The painter is renowned for his mastery of large-scale and scroll paintings, earning titles such as "Inheritor of the Grand Landscape Painting Tradition" and "Master of Panoramic Landscape Painting." His exhibition "Mega Landscape Painting" featuring classical poetry masterpieces combines classical literature with modern painting, demonstrating groundbreaking and enlightening significance. It is hailed as "a missing piece in the history of painting that should be preserved as a model." Many of his monumental works, whether in gold and jade colors, ink splashes, or interwoven lines, are celebrated for their majestic and profound artistic conception.
China Central Television News Channel has reported on his creations, including the "Wuyi Mountain Scroll" (4000cm × 80cm) and the "Water Narcissus Scroll." CCTV-2's "Treasure Identification" program has featured a special introduction on the painter. Over the decades, he has embraced the philosophy "The heavens and earth are my teachers," immersing himself in life and nature, using sketches as his creative source. He has made eight trips to Huangshan and eight ascents to Mount Tai, traversing the vast landscapes of China, integrating rich life experiences and contemporary spirit into his artistic style. His works have won numerous awards at domestic and international exhibitions and have been collected by institutions such as the Mausoleum of the Chairman, the Ministry of Culture, the Central Academy of Fine Arts, the Chinese Painting Research Institute, the Liaoning Museum, the Zhang Xueliang Exhibition Hall, and many internationally renowned individuals.
Articles and works by experts have been published in journals such as Art, Art Review, Art World, People's Daily, Guangming Daily, China Art News, and Biographical Literature. His works are recorded in classic collections like Selected Works of Contemporary Chinese Artists and Masterpieces of Modern Chinese Artists, and he was awarded the "Outstanding Talent Award in Contemporary Chinese Painting" by the National Personnel Ministry. Published collections include Yi Huichun's Works, Yi Huichun's Paintings, Selected Works of Yi Huichun in Chinese Painting, and Masterpieces of Modern Chinese Artists — Selected Works of Yi Huichun.
