In the past two years, exhibitions in Shenzhen's interior design industry have been thriving. Various-sized groups have emerged, making it difficult to distinguish between mainstream and fringe players. This is a positive development, as it has brought more designers out of the shadows, enhancing academic exchanges and elevating the overall level of interior design in Shenzhen. Currently, the pursuit of quick results is hindering design development. For example, a project worth millions of yuan may only have an average of one or two months for preliminary design. Such a short timeframe results in a lack of creativity and refinement in the proposals, ultimately restricting design growth and leading to a "copy-and-paste" approach in design. Faced with the development trends of interior design in advanced countries, we should not lose our direction or blindly copy others. Instead, we should continuously strengthen our understanding of interior design theory, build on our foundational skills, and draw inspiration while maintaining an attitude of exploration and innovation toward foreign design theories and schools. This will enable our work to better reflect the cultural characteristics of different periods, regions, and ethnic groups in China.
China's history of interior design is short, but its development has been rapid. Statistics show that there are currently 550,000 people engaged in the decorative construction industry in China, generating a total output value of 240 billion yuan annually. Over 10 higher education institutions and more than 200 secondary vocational schools offer decoration design programs (such as interior design, environmental art design, etc.), with an average annual graduate enrollment of around 10,000. However, compared to international advanced levels, China still has a significant gap in design theory, construction practice, decorative materials, and craftsmanship.
The development of design is closely tied to the market. Currently, in China's interior design project bidding processes, most are inseparable from decorative engineering companies, where clients often invite qualified decorative engineering companies to bid. These companies usually have their own design teams. Perhaps due to the late start of design companies and the lack of industry standards and qualification certifications, many highly skilled designers are affiliated with large decorative engineering companies. While design is highly valued, most project bids begin with design proposals, with design being used to assess the capabilities of engineering companies.
Amid the booming scene of China's interior design market, there remains a state of disorganization. This may be because there is a lack of elite design teams, and the influence of individual designers is far from sufficient. Most design studios are still small workshops, with few exhibitions or seminars specifically organized around certain design topics. Additionally, China's interior design industry lacks influential and cohesive professional awards. Although the 9th National Fine Arts Exhibition now includes design awards, they are like the Olympic football tournament—they lack the global impact of the World Cup.
Design is an ever-evolving field, with new technologies and materials emerging daily, and the market mechanism is maturing. Our design approaches must always innovate. Designers must avoid, so I borrow a quote from Mr. Nan Huaijin as the title: When knowledge is profound, the mind remains calm.
