All who learn calligraphy must first study regular script;
all who study regular script must choose to learn the four styles of Ouyang, Yan, Liu, and Zhao.
The representative works of the four styles of regular script are:
Ouyang Xun's Nine Dragons Screen, Yan Zhenqing's Dapot, Liu Gongquan's Xuanmi, and Yue Mengfu's Shouchuntang.
Thus, these four calligraphy books have long been the textbooks for learning calligraphy, popular as both introductory and advanced materials.
However, due to continuous chiseling and weathering over thousands of years, the ancient steles have become worn and fragmented. Even fine copies are prone to errors.
Mr. Huang Yang (Shuzhou) of the Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Research Society, deeply devoted to the four styles, visited all four steles, meticulously examining and verifying the missing characters.
He identified their original forms and extensively studied the calligraphy of the four masters, selecting similar brushwork to fill in missing or heavily faded sections, integrating them seamlessly with the entire stele.
For some incomplete sections in current calligraphy books, there were originally no missing characters—only residual traces in the steles or rubbings were mistakenly included. These have now been identified and removed.
Conversely, some sections originally containing characters were omitted in previous editions, which have now been restored.
Thus, the four-style "Four Missing Characters Edition," combining academic rigor with practical value, is now presented for the first time.
Because the "Complete Characters Edition" embodies the essence of the four masters' calligraphy, fills the gaps in the steles, and restores their original form, it is highly valued by calligraphy scholars and eagerly welcomed by calligraphy enthusiasts!"
