Huanggang High School (locally known as "Huanggao") is a long-standing "legend" in Chinese education, maintaining a near 100% college entrance exam pass rate for over two decades (98.1% for undergraduate admission in 2004, with 249 students scoring above 600). Many of its students have won the top positions in the province's liberal arts, sciences, and foreign language college entrance exams. Over 500 students have been recommended for further studies at prestigious institutions such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, and the University of Science and Technology of China. Its students consistently rank first in the province in mathematics, physics, and chemistry competitions, winning more than 3,000 provincial-level awards and over 1,000 national-level awards. In international mathematics, physics, and chemistry Olympiads, it has won 7 gold, 4 silver, and 1 bronze medals, a rare achievement in China's secondary education. The school is hailed as a "cradle for nurturing talent and a training ground for national champions." In early 2005, Yin Xiaoping, a student in Class 9 of Senior 3 at Huanggang High School, also excelled and entered the national mathematics olympiad training team.
