The 20th Century Chinese Historiography Masterpieces published by our press aims to systematically showcase the historiographical achievements of the last century, presenting the works of the most representative historians to readers. The 20th century was a period of the most significant development and profound transformation in Chinese historiography. New eras, new historical perspectives, new historical materials, new methods, and a new academic and cultural atmosphere all contributed to the historiography of 20th-century China. Zhou Gu (1898–1996) was a native of Yiyang, Hunan. After graduating from the English Department of Beijing Normal College in 1921, he first taught English and ethics at Hunan Normal School and later taught at Shanghai Jiao Tong University Affiliated High School and China University. Between 1930 and 1942, he served as a professor and head of the Sociology Department at Zhongshan University, followed by a professor and head of the Social History Department at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. After 1942, he taught at Fudan University, serving as a professor, head of the History Department, and vice president. He also served as the executive chair of the presidium of the Chinese Historiography Society, president of the Shanghai History Society, vice president of the Shanghai Association of Philosophy and Social Sciences, and vice president of the Shanghai Municipal People's Congress and the Shanghai Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. He held positions such as the central chairman of the China Democratic League, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, and director of the Science, Education, Culture, and Health Committee. His major works include Social History of China, General History of China, Political History of China, General History of the World, Formal Logic and Dialectics, History and Aesthetics, and Selected Essays on Zhou Gucheng's Historiography.
