Features: Hideo Hoshino (1926–), a contemporary Japanese civil law scholar. After graduating from the old Tokyo Higher School, he enrolled in the Faculty of Law at Tokyo University. He graduated in 1952, was appointed as an associate professor at the Faculty of Law in 1955, studied at the University of Paris in France from 1956 to 1958, and was promoted to professor at the Faculty of Law at Tokyo University in 1965, receiving a doctorate in law from the faculty. He retired in 1987 and became an honorary professor at Tokyo University. That same year, he was appointed as a professor at the Faculty of Law and Economics at Chiba University and served as a long-term member of the National Legal Reform Council. Hideo Hoshino dedicated his life to teaching and researching civil law. Among his extensive writings, his systematic works include The Law of Landlord and Tenant (Volume 26 of the Orix Legal Studies Series, 1961). His textbooks and self-study materials include General Lectures on Civil Law (Orix, 1983), An Introduction to Civil Law (Volumes 1–4, Ryo Shuppan Kyokai, first published in 1971), and his collected papers include Collected Works on Civil Law (8 volumes, Orix, 1970–1996), Studies on Civil Case Judgments (5 volumes, Orix, 1971–1990), Focus on Civil Law (Orix, 1987), Civil Law·Property Law, and Civil Law·Family Law (both published by the Broadcasting University Education Promotion Association in 1994), among others. Additionally, he has published hundreds of academic papers on civil law.
