Features: Edward Grieg (1843-1907) was a famous Norwegian composer. He integrated Norwegian folk songs and dances into his works, creating a large number of compositions in different genres. His melodies are simple and deeply rooted in national character, with distinctive harmonies, clever techniques, and rich colors. Peer Gynt, Suite No. 1 and Suite No. 2 were originally composed as musical scores for the poetic drama Peer Gynt by the renowned Norwegian playwright Ibsen. The drama draws its material from Norwegian folk tales: Peer Gynt abducts his friend's bride at a rural wedding, flees to avoid retaliation, and ends up in the kingdom of the mountain spirit. Later, he secretly returns home to care for his mother. Peer Gynt's entire property is confiscated due to unpaid taxes, forcing him to leave his hometown once again and embark on an adventurous life at sea. In his old age, he returns to his homeland as a stranger, unknown and unwanted by anyone. Fortunately, his loyal fiancée Solveig's love saves him. Peer Gynt's adventures are a series of colorful and satirical interludes. Through the typical bourgeois figure of Peer Gynt, Ibsen exposes the hypocrisy, cowardice, and cruelty of the self-serving bourgeoisie who adapt to life. After multiple performances of the drama, the composer selected eight segments to adapt into two orchestral suites (Peer Gynt Suite and Suite No. 2), which are accessible and have become popular repertoire for many orchestras. The suite consists of four movements, each developed from a single theme, with unified musical imagery.
