Features: This is a book in the series of New Realistic Fiction of China. It is a collection of some outstanding middle-length novels published since 2004. The novel "Police Chief" shares the same name as the collection. The protagonist Xu Baochang in this novel is a hero who is fearless of life and death and apprehends criminals, yet somewhat naive when dealing with relationships between superiors and subordinates. In the end, he reveals his heroic nature by refusing the "generous gift" from the county magistrate—transferring his wife from a bankrupt enterprise to a golden rice bowl in a bank—and becomes a real police officer he wanted to be. Other novels in the collection, such as "Speeding Up the Train," which describe reforms in the railway industry, are also written with distinctive features and have been selected by several publications, demonstrating a certain readability. In summary, the collection is positive and uplifting.
