Features: Naturalism largely embodies critical realism and is an extension of realism. After the 1880s, it surpassed impressionism. While naturalism closely observes social flaws, its ideological foundation differs from that of symbolists, leading to mutual estrangement. Unlike realism, which follows a positive path, early naturalism carried a certain negativity, while later it demonstrated rational insights and a compelling force towards reality. As a result, naturalism was intentionally downplayed as the antithesis of real prosperity.
