Fragment: The long-green bitter gourd is a hybrid variety selected from the cross between the green bitter gourd and the white bitter gourd. The fruit is long spindle-shaped, with green skin and inconspicuous warty protrusions, and has good quality. The Penang bitter gourd, a Singapore variety, has strong plant growth and vigorous branching. The fruit is long conical, about 20 cm long, with relatively regular longitudinal grooves, stripes, and alternating warty protrusions. The fruit is light green, with tender flesh and a moderate bitterness. The average weight of a single fruit is about 0.4 kg. There are many varieties commonly seen in the market. When selecting seeds, attention should be paid to the response of this variety to long daylight hours, and during cultivation, the balance between vegetative growth and reproductive growth should be adjusted.
1.3 Cultivation Techniques
Bitter gourd is cultivated once a year in the northern region, taking Harbin as an example. Generally, seedlings are raised in seedbeds or greenhouses at the end of March or early April. The seedling age is about 45–50 days, and transplanting is carried out after the final frost. Harvesting begins in early July and ends before the frost in mid-September.
