Ling Mengchu faced continuous setbacks in his official career, similar to Feng Menglong, leading to significant differences and rebellious tendencies in his spirit compared to orthodox traditional scholars, which are evident in his writings and works. What solidified his important place in literary history are the vernacular short story collections he compiled, Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio () and More Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio (). After the completion of Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio, it was widely acclaimed. Upon the strong invitation of publishers, Ling Mengchu continued with More Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio. In More Strange Tales, he no longer adapted existing works but created them independently. The social consciousness of the urban populace and the critique and resistance against the outdated traditional concepts it portrays are even more intense than in the "Three Words" (). For example, in the story A Great Scholar's Quarrel over a Minor Matter, Zhu Xi, due to personal grievances with Tang Zhongyou, sought revenge by ruthlessly persecuting the courtesan Yan Rui, forcing her to confess her alleged affair with Tang. The story portrays Zhu Xi, the great scholar, as a petty person, truly representing the late Ming literati's deep aversion to the official orthodoxy of Neo-Confucianism as advocated by Zhu Xi and Liang. The direct target of his attack was first the fake scholars of his time. More Strange Tales also demonstrates an ahead-of-its-time understanding of women's rights. It once questioned: Why is it that men remarrying or patronizing courtesans is met with indifference, yet women remarrying or showing slight infidelity are condemned by all? The awareness of equality in gender relationships is expressed quite clearly. In the story Zhao Niang's Love Affair, Wu Niang, after being defiled, designs revenge, and her husband sees her "demonstrate unwavering resolve and respects her even more." Here, the perception of a woman's "unwavering resolve" clearly contradicts the Neo-Confucian doctrine of "Dying is a small matter, losing chastity is a great matter," reflecting a more humanistic and modern perspective. Additionally, the material in More Strange Tales is closer to daily life, making it conducive to deeper exploration of human nature. Later works like The Story of the Stone () and The Scholars () achieved greater success by developing in this direction.
