Features: The citations introduced in this book are basically from the "French 20th Century Literature Series," which consists of seventy volumes. I had the honor to serve as the chief editor and collaborate with scholars and colleagues in China to complete this largest library of contemporary foreign literature, which has become an unforgettable and beautiful memory in my life. This literature possesses a certain artistic quality, is easily spread, and is widely enjoyed by audiences, having a vast readership. Its detective novels are works of realism. The themes it addresses are a dramatic period of French history during the 19th century. For readers familiar with the historical process of that period, it is necessary to provide a brief overview of the origins and developments of these historical events. The book covers numerous and extensive topics, naturally forming a comprehensive picture. In these two "Essays" series, involving over sixty to seventy writers and around one hundred works, ranging from the beginning to the end of the century, they have actually demonstrated the general historical process and various aspects of the development of 20th-century French literature. For major intellectual trends and prominent literary phenomena, there are several focused descriptions, which, to a certain extent, have already grasped the main content that a literary history should possess. Therefore, they are considered as the continuation of the original three-volume "History of French Literature," and their content has been summarized into twelve thematic sections.
