The University of Cambridge is a world-renowned higher education institution. The Cambridge ESOL (English as a Foreign Language) Testing Center is a globally recognized language proficiency assessment organization, directly affiliated with the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES), the largest educational assessment body in the UK. The Cambridge ESOL examination program is widely recognized by tens of thousands of educational institutions and employers worldwide, with its English as a Foreign Language examinations widely accepted as valid proof for academic advancement, employment, and other purposes. Since its inception in 1913, it has introduced a series of examinations and services, including the Cambridge Business English Certificate (BEC), BULATS, the General and Advanced Certificate in English (MSE), Young Learners English (YL), and the Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults. Currently, it has test centers in over 130 countries, with over 1.5 million people taking Cambridge ESOL examinations each year.
Cambridge ESOL is supported by continuous research. The members of the ESOL department consist of experts and researchers with extensive knowledge in applied linguistics and teaching practice. They are responsible for designing examinations and courses, providing relevant materials, organizing training programs, and conducting ongoing research on all aspects of the examinations to ensure continuous improvement in ESOL tests and courses, as well as in teaching and examination techniques. This ensures that the examinations are highly scientific, authoritative, and stable, enjoying a high reputation internationally.
The Cambridge English Skills Certificate (CELS) examination system is designed for non-native English speakers aged 16 and above, developed by the Cambridge ESOL Testing Center after thorough and comprehensive research on the English learning needs in over 100 non-English-speaking countries worldwide. It is a complete and independent English certificate examination system composed of four separate skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. It was officially launched globally in May 2002.
CELS differs from other Cambridge ESOL certificate examination systems in its unique design. It takes into account the diverse practical needs of examinees, separating the four skills of English—Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing—into independent teaching modules and assessment methods, ultimately awarding certificates for each skill to qualified candidates. The purpose of CELS is to provide candidates with greater flexibility, allowing them to choose skills that offer higher advantages and better potential for development, or skills that are more relevant to their careers and work to take the examination and obtain certificates. This design caters to multiple needs, enabling candidates to participate in English skill learning and examinations that are most useful to them or to take examinations at levels that match their actual abilities.
With China’s increasing internationalization, people in daily work and life are increasingly required to selectively highlight their English skills in Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing based on their individual circumstances. CELS examinations are specifically designed to meet this demand, enabling professionals in different fields to enhance their job capabilities and achieve career advancement and salary increases through CELS certification. I believe that the CELS English Skills Certificate program will have even broader development potential in China’s English training market.
Currently, the CELS Cambridge English Skills Certificate course has been introduced and published by Economic Science Press, adding a new Cambridge ESOL examination training textbook to the rapidly growing English teaching and training market. It is hoped that this textbook will help a wide range of English learners improve their individual English skills, obtain the CELS Cambridge English Skills Certificate, and gain widespread popularity among English teaching institutions and learners.
