Minority Rights: Nationalism, Multiculturalism, and Citizenship

Author: (Canada) Will Kymlicka
Publisher:
Publication Date: 2005-05-01
Features: This book is a collection of essays, the result of Professor Will Kymlicka of Canada's meticulous research on the status and rights of ethnic cultural groups in Western countries over the past six years. It is also a significant collection of essays that has had an important impact on discussions on Western nationalism and multiculturalism in recent years. The author systematically examines Western nationalism from political, institutional, educational, and linguistic perspectives, and summarizes and elaborates on it within the framework of liberal values such as freedom, justice, and democracy. The book is divided into four parts: Part "The Evolution of the Debate on Minority Rights," which summarizes the evolution of the debate on the rights of ethnic cultural minority groups over the past 15 years; Part "Ethnic Cultural Justice," which discusses the requirements of ethnic cultural justice in a free and democratic society; Part "Misunderstanding Nationalism," which explores the common misconceptions and ideas that liberals typically hold about nationalism; and Part "Democratic Citizens in Multicultural States," which examines how the practice of democratic citizenship can be maintained and developed in a diverse era. The book is well-researched, analytically insightful, and quite forward-looking, reflecting the new dynamics of liberal theory in contemporary Western political philosophy. It holds some reference value for Chinese readers to understand how Western countries handle minority issues.
