Features: The story takes place in the town of Jacmel in Haiti, South America. The novel tells the legendary experiences of Adriana, a young French girl. She is young and beautiful, a shining star in Jacmel. Tragedy strikes at her wedding, where the girl suddenly collapses and dies during the ceremony. It all stems from an evil butterfly—Eltazar Grandisere. This is a demon who, was cursed to become a butterfly because he seduced the adopted gardener of his foster father. He poisoned the lemonade at the wedding. Next, Jacmel holds a vigil for the young girl, which is a grand Vodou tradition of a masked carnival where people wildly sing, dance, and play various eerie roles. The day after Adriana's burial, her body disappears from the grave. No one knows where she went. The beautiful girl leaves, and Jacmel declines ever since. After her death, the narrator of the novel, Patrick, Adriana's childhood friend and one of her devoted admirers, embarks on a journey to find her traces and eventually becomes a university professor. One day, while Patrick is teaching his students, the missing Adriana suddenly appears in the classroom, still as beautiful and captivating as ever.
