A Collection of Ancient Chinese Educational Classics. Enlightenment Riddles

Author: Li Zhuang
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2005-04-01
Features: This book is a combined edition of "Enlightenment in Three-Character Parallelism" by Li Zhuang from the Qing Dynasty and "Rhythm Enlightenment" by Che Wanyu from the Qing Dynasty. Both original works are popular primers for learning basic knowledge of poetic parallelism and rhyme. Since the Yuan and Ming dynasties, many similar small-scale popular reference books have appeared, but most have been lost to time. We have searched for and verified the original texts of the two books, making minor revisions to a few words. The reason for choosing these two books is that among existing books of this type, they are the most widely distributed and influential. Additionally, they target readers with different levels of literary appreciation. The combination is relatively compact, forming a progressive and coherent relationship. The two books each have unique characteristics in writing style and literary quality. Li Zhuang's "Enlightenment in Three-Character Parallelism" features three-character lines, vivid imagery, well-structured parallelism, simple meanings, fluent language, and is easy to understand and memorize. Che Wanyu's "Rhythm Enlightenment" is widely circulated in this genre. The author organizes common rhyming words into rhyming phrases, which are themselves elegant and structured parallelisms. At the same time, it cleverly incorporates numerous historical stories and idiomatic expressions, making it melodious in sound and rhythm, well-structured in form, and rich in content. In ancient times, they were used as primers for children's education and models for beginners in writing rhyming texts, highly regarded by scholars and literati. Of course, from today's perspective, some of the content in these books promotes the idea of imperial grace and the path to officialdom in imperial examinations, as well as unscientific secular concepts. However, in terms of rhetorical refinement, rhythm, and rich knowledge and entertainment value, they still hold certain cultural significance.
