The importance of English reading in postgraduate entrance exams is undeniable, especially after the 2005 new syllabus announced its reform. When it comes to reviewing the reading section, how can one achieve the best results? To score well in the reading section of the postgraduate entrance exam English, one must first clarify the various skills it requires: vocabulary recognition, comprehension of difficult sentences, structural understanding, and question-type analysis. Many candidates focus only on cultivating one or two of these skills, yet the results remain unsatisfactory. How can one develop all four skills and excel in the postgraduate entrance exam English battlefield? Practice has proven that thoroughly studying past exam reading questions is the most effective method.
By "thoroughly studying," it means making comprehensive breakthroughs in reading questions—not just memorizing vocabulary and analyzing difficult sentences to improve language proficiency, but also deciphering the thinking behind different question types to ensure a permanent advantage. This book serves as such a reference, analyzing reading questions to help candidates quickly and comprehensively improve their postgraduate entrance exam English reading skills and test-taking abilities. Past reading questions are the best study materials because they are the most authoritative and best reflect future question-setting trends. By fully understanding and digesting all content in past reading questions, one can achieve the ability to generalize. Of course, this doesn’t mean that all out-of-class reading is unnecessary. In fact, reading some out-of-class materials is beneficial. For selecting out-of-class reading materials, refer to the second part of this book.
In addition to other sections, each unit in the third part is divided into three parts:
1. Past Exam Reading Questions
For the earlier years’ questions, there’s no need to time yourself; however, for later questions, complete them within the specified time, such as 15 minutes per passage, to practice your speed. But when taking the actual exam, emphasize understanding the original text rather than speed, because accuracy is most important, and there’s usually ample time. Of course, some students may need to improve their speed. For these candidates, in addition to developing correct reading habits (e.g., skimming to find the main idea and scanning to locate details), they should also learn to identify key information while reading, such as noting high-frequency words or phrases, judging the main idea of paragraphs, and summarizing the central theme of the passage.
2. Past Exam Reading Question Analysis
This section includes the following:
1. Article Structure and Content
Each passage is categorized structurally, helping candidates grasp the macro-structure to quickly identify the main idea. Additionally, a summary of each passage’s content is provided.
2. Core Vocabulary
This section annotates important vocabulary, phrases, and usage in the reading passage. For key vocabulary, some derivatives, synonyms, and memory tips are given. These should be memorized together with the core words. If you can remember all the important vocabulary in the original text, you’ll have mastered most of the postgraduate entrance exam English vocabulary. You’ll also notice some words that are out of the syllabus but have high usage frequency—these should still be memorized.
3. Difficult Sentence Analysis
The author selects sentences with significant structural and comprehension challenges from the reading passage and provides detailed, practical structural analysis, followed by a reference translation. Mastering this section greatly enhances difficult sentence analysis skills and translation proficiency.
3. Question Explanations
The author provides detailed answers to all questions and offers many helpful tips on reading strategies and problem-solving approaches.
