Features: Qiu Peiran, a grandmaster of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), possesses profound expertise in medicine while also being a scholar versed in literature, philosophy, and a poet with deep medical insights. This year, as he celebrates his 80th birthday, a collection of his works, Selected Works of Qiu Peiran, has been published. The medical essays and case studies in the collection are highly commendable, reflecting the essence of TCM. Works such as A Study on Zhang Zhongjing’s Role as the Governor of Changsha, Sun Simiao’s Health Preservation Methods, and An Examination of the Pathways of the Extraordinary Meridians demonstrate the author’s depth in historical research and theoretical studies of TCM. Over a hundred case studies highlight the essence of his 70-year medical career. Even more admirable is his passionate advocacy for reviving the TCM industry, coupled with his personal commitment. Qiu Peiran deeply loves the fine Chinese culture and has a particular expertise in Confucian studies. His poetry, which emphasizes rhyme, allusions, and the fusion of scenery and emotion, is rich in meaning and deeply reflects his patriotism and love for the people. "Jianfeng Lou" (Swordwind Tower) is the name of his study, and the poetry collection Jianfeng Lou Poems has been highly praised by the literary and art circles. Over seventy calligraphers contributed to it, and the master of Chinese painting, Lu Yanshao, specially painted illustrations for Two Poems on Visiting Huangshan. Qiu Peiran’s essays also have distinctive features—concise in language, profound in thought, and highly readable. Works such as Preserve Life Without Overindulging, Reminiscing Tang Yun in Grand Style, and Meeting a Wise Man at Yuhuangguan Temple are widely admired. At the turn of the century, he donated his collection of one hundred thousand volumes of books to the Cixi Library in his hometown, saying sincerely, "I hope to improve the cultural literacy and promote economic development of my fellow villagers, making even a small contribution." This reflects the broad-mindedness of a contemporary Confucian physician. "A brush for the people is truly precious," a scroll inscribed by Hu Wansui for Qiu Peiran, also embodies his dedication to healing the sick, diligent study of Confucianism, and relentless writing. Qiu Peiran is a renowned Chinese TCM physician, nearing his nineties, with a 70-year medical career and widespread reputation for his medical ethics. He has read tens of thousands of books and authored numerous works, with 36 medical and literary books either edited or written by him. He has devoted over four decades to the Cihai (Comprehensive Dictionary) project and has also compiled various dictionaries, series, and encyclopedias. He has nurtured a large number of TCM talents. Selected Works of Qiu Peiran is divided into two volumes. The first volume consists of three parts: one for essays, one for medical theories, and one for Jianfeng Lou essays. The second volume includes two parts: one for case studies and one for Jianfeng Lou poems. This Selected Works compiles 404 of Qiu Peiran’s major works (essays, poems, case studies, etc.). The first volume is divided into three sections: essays, medical theories, and Jianfeng Lou essays. The second volume is divided into two sections: case studies and Jianfeng Lou poems. It includes 35 medical theories, 66 essays, 125 case studies, and 140 poems, totaling 700,000 words, along with over 40 illustrations. In Selected Works of Qiu Peiran, Qiu Peiran believes that the philosophy of "harmony between heaven and man" contributes to the sustainable development of both human and natural environments. The idea of "harmony without uniformity" promotes the diversity of culture. The principle of "using righteousness to restrain profit" helps resolve conflicts between individuals and groups. The concept of "the way to become a noble person" fosters the cultivation of ideal personalities. These four aspects are mutually supportive. At the same time, he briefly outlines three principles for being a person: advocating "benevolence as the foundation," "etiquette as the restraint," and "righteousness as the measure." Qiu Peiran says that establishing such a view of health preservation can benefit both individuals and society, surpassing the benefits of obsessing over health supplements.
