Features: Ye Shengtao (1894.10.28-1988.2.16), originally named Shi Shaojun, was born in Suzhou, Jiangsu. His father worked as an accountant for a landlord, and the family lived in poverty. In 1907, he entered Caoqiao Middle School and, after graduation, became a teacher at an elementary school. In 1914, he was dismissed from the school and, during his period of seclusion, published classical-style novels in magazines such as Laihou Zhou. In autumn 1915, he moved to Shanghai to teach Chinese at Shanggong School, affiliated with the Commercial Press, and compiled primary school Chinese textbooks for the press. In 1917, he was hired to teach at the fifth higher primary school in Wuxian County. In 1918, he published a vernacular short story titled Spring Banquet Trifles in Women's Magazine, Vol. 4, Nos. 2-3. In 1919, he joined the New Tide Society, an organization founded by students of Peking University, and published novels and essays in New Tide. In 1921, he co-founded the Literary Research Association with Zheng Zhenduo, Mao Dun, and others, and published works in Novel Monthly and Literary Weekly. In 1922, he published his first short story collection, The Veil. In 1923, The Weaver Girl was published, marking the first collection of fairy tales in China. In 1928, he wrote the outstanding novel Ni Huanzhi. From 1923 to 1930, he worked as an editor at the Commercial Press in Shanghai. In 1927, he began editing Novel Monthly. In 1930, he transferred to Kaiping Bookstore as an editor. During the War of Resistance Against Japan, his family moved inland, and he served as a professor in the Chinese Department of Wuhan University in Leshan. Later, he moved to Chengdu to oversee the editorial affairs of Kaiping Bookstore. In 1946, he returned to Shanghai. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he served as Director of the State Publishing Administration, Vice Minister of Education, President of the People's Education Press, Director of the Central Research Institute of Historians, and Vice Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
