The Chinese-English Convalescence and Rehabilitation Dictionary is about to be officially published. It serves as an essential reference tool for convalescence and rehabilitation professionals in writing academic papers and participating in global scientific exchanges. This marks a joyous occasion for the field of convalescence and rehabilitation in China. I extend heartfelt gratitude to the compilers and the publisher.
Convalescence and rehabilitation medicine is a relatively new discipline that has emerged from the integration of convalescence science and rehabilitation medicine. It has developed over a long period by incorporating achievements from rehabilitation medicine. This field combines modern convalescence theory and techniques with contemporary rehabilitation theory and practices to enhance physical fitness, prevent diseases, and promote recovery using various convalescence factors and measures. As a result, it has given rise to many new theories, perspectives, and technologies. Its integration with traditional Chinese medicine adds unique characteristics. Convalescence and rehabilitation medicine is an important component of modern medicine.
Although the term "convalescence and rehabilitation" was adopted in China relatively late, traditional Chinese medicine has a long history of "health preservation." Ancient classics such as the Tao Te Ching, Zhuangzi, Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon, Commentaries on the Spring and Autumn Annals, On Health Preservation, On Cultivating Nature and Prolonging Life, and On Extending Life Through Health Preservation have long expounded on profound doctrines and theories such as "harmony with nature," "correspondence between heaven and man," "tranquility and emptiness," "regular daily routines," "moderate diet," "nourishing both body and spirit," "purity and serenity," "nourishing the spirit through movement," "cultivating Qi," and "preserving vitality." These texts have argued that natural environments, climatic conditions, lifestyle, exercise, emotional well-being, and dietary management are all related to health and longevity. They have introduced scientific methods for convalescence and rehabilitation, including hydrotherapy, spelotherapy, mineral spring therapy, medicinal diets, acupuncture, Qigong, massage, the Five-Animal Games, and herbal medicine.
Currently, China has over 1,000 convalescence facilities, most county-level hospitals have rehabilitation departments, and numerous convalescence and rehabilitation centers have been established, with over 100,000 professionals in the field. With the continuous improvement of living standards and the growing elderly population, the demand for convalescence and rehabilitation professionals will increase further.
Today, modern science and technology are advancing rapidly, and international exchanges are becoming more frequent. Convalescence and rehabilitation professionals not only need to read foreign literature on the subject but also engage in international scientific exchanges by writing papers. Therefore, they urgently require a specialized reference tool for their field. The publication of The Chinese-English Convalescence and Rehabilitation Dictionary undoubtedly fills a gap in the profession.
No gold is pure, no person is perfect, and no book is flawless. Every reference work has its imperfections. Thus, The Chinese-English Convalescence and Rehabilitation Dictionary is unlikely to be free of flaws. We sincerely hope that kind readers will provide valuable feedback to help it become more complete and enriched.
