Features: To explore the corporate philanthropic behavior of Chinese companies and compare the similarities and differences with that of foreign-funded companies, the Corporate Donation Research Team of the Social Policy Research Center at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences conducted Phase II research from 2000 to 2003 based on Phase I research. The goal of Phase II research was to analyze the correlation between corporate donation philosophies and behaviors, explain the differences in donations between Chinese and foreign-funded companies, and propose policy recommendations to further promote the development of corporate social philanthropy in China.
Phase II research was based on case studies, categorizing and analyzing case data. It revealed significant differences between Chinese and foreign-funded companies in terms of donation types and donation habits, thereby developing a new perspective in corporate donation research—the perspective of donation culture. This new perspective brings us new ways of observation and reflection, requiring the recombination of corporate donation information through new analytical methods to reveal the multicultural roots behind corporate donation behaviors. It is believed that the publication and dissemination of this research will attract interest from the corporate sector and the NGO sector, promoting more rational exchanges and mutual understanding between the two.
Through comparative case studies of 30 enterprises in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, the research systematically analyzed the similarities and differences in the donation philosophies and behaviors of different types of enterprises, including state-owned enterprises, private enterprises, and foreign-invested companies operating in China. To adapt to marketization strategies, different types of enterprises adopted varying philanthropic donation strategies, with mutually beneficial donations becoming the dominant action model for companies to engage in social philanthropy.
