Huang Daozhou (1585–1646), styled Youping, was a native of Tongshan in Zhangpu, Fujian. Tongshan was an isolated island (now Dongshan Island), with a stone chamber in the middle where Huang Daozhou spent his early years reading and writing, hence his title "Shizhai Master." He passed the imperial examination in the second year of the Tianqi reign (1622) and was appointed as a compiler. When the Qing army entered the capital, he supported the enthronement of the Longwu Emperor in Fujian. In 1645, he was captured by the Qing army and executed in Nanjing in 1646 at the age of 62. Huang Daozhou was known for his high moral character and profound scholarship, as recorded in history. During his twenty years in office, he submitted over thirty memorials, his writings being stern and revealing his bold and loyal spirit.
