Features:
1. The 3,500 characters collected in this manual are based on the "Common Characters List of Modern Chinese" jointly released by the National Language Work Committee and the Ministry of Education in March 1988.
2. The four-corner number system used is based on the "New Four-Corner Number Dictionary" (Ninth Revised and Reprinted Edition) published by the Commercial Press in 1985.
3. The forms of characters in this manual are based on the "Simplified Character Headquarters," the "List for Standardizing Variant Characters," and the "General Printable Chinese Character Forms List." The head character is the simplified form for ease of recognizing cursive script and for lookup. If a traditional form exists, it is appended to the head character in brackets [].
4. The phonetic annotations for characters are selected only from the "phonetic annotations in the New Four-Corner Number Dictionary." The phonetic index is based on this.
5. The cursive script used in this manual is all sourced. Referenced for writing and selection are the "Great Chinese Dictionary," "Common Character Calligraphy," "Shuowen Jiezi," "Cursive and Seal Script Collection of Qing Dynasty Calligraphers," "Kangxi Dictionary," and the "Five-Body Pencil Dictionary."
6. For characters with multiple pronunciations, meanings, or cursive forms, the selection is generally based on form, with only one character chosen. For a few characters, two to three cursive forms are selected.
