This book is a comprehensive guide to modern software development practices embodied by the Rational Unified Process (RUP). It provides a series of practical recommendations and guidance, enabling software development professionals to learn how to tackle challenging projects—whether small or large—by applying an iterative, risk-driven development method based on proven error tracking records. The book introduces key issues related to the planning and management of iterative projects, fundamental knowledge of component design and software architecture, and the correct application of use cases. All team members—from project managers to system analysts, from developers to testers—will learn how to quickly apply RUP to their work. Readers will discover that RUP is a flexible, universally applicable process framework that can be tailored to meet the needs of various types and sizes of development projects. The core content covered in this book includes:
- How to use RUP for iterative development, introducing a design-centric approach, mitigating risks, and ensuring software quality;
- Tasks related to the four phases of RUP (Inception, Elaboration, Construction, and Transition);
- The roles and responsibilities of project managers, system architects, system analysts, developers, testers, and process engineers in an RUP project;
- Incrementally applying RUP with minimal risk;
- Common error patterns in the RUP process and how to avoid them.
Through this book, readers can quickly master RUP and effortlessly leverage its immense power to enhance the productivity of their development teams.
