During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, the state of Chen was conquered, and the descendants of Hu Gong Man adopted the name of their former state as their surname. The founding ancestor of the Chen surname is Hu Gong Man.
The Chen surname has several notable ancestral hometowns (fengwang): Yingzhou, Runan, Xiapi, Guangling, Donghai, Henan, Wudang, Lujiang, Jingzhao, and Fengyi.
