Illustrate ideology

Author: Slavoj ?i?ek

Publish Date: 2002-05-01
Features: Slavoj ?i?ek, a Slovenian scholar hailed as a "dark horse" who broke into Western academia, is celebrated for his work. The Sublime Object of Ideology is a compilation of discussions on ideology by fourteen Western scholars, including ?i?ek himself, selected and edited by him. As the title suggests, ?i?ek aims to map out a picture of Western Marxism's understanding of ideology since Adorno through this effort. Except for the newly written "Introduction," the rest of the selected texts are originally published and can stand alone as chapters, but the editor clearly hopes readers will read them together. With an ingenious arrangement in the form of chapters, they form an organic whole. ?i?ek includes the chapter from his acclaimed work The Sublime Object of Ideology as the last chapter of this book. Is this an attempt to once again emphasize the proposition he borrowed from Lacan—"truth comes from misrecognition"? We believe readers will naturally arrive at an answer to this question after reading the entire book.
