Features: Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is one of the most widely deployed protocols in today's networks and the de facto routing protocol for the Internet. BGP is a flexible protocol, offering many options for network designers and engineers. Additionally, its extensibility and software implementation enhancements make BGP a powerful and comprehensive tool. This book provides a detailed introduction to BGP features and applications. The book is divided into 5 parts and 12 chapters. Part I focuses on understanding advanced BGP. Chapter 1 explains the basic features of BGP and compares its characteristics with those of IGP. Chapter 2 reviews BGP path attributes and explains the BGP path selection algorithm based on this foundation. It also provides an in-depth introduction to BGP processes and memory usage, routing information bases, and the switching characteristics of IOS. Chapter 3 primarily discusses BGP performance tuning, including considerations for the TCP protocol, queue optimization, BGP update message generation, interdependencies of performance tuning, and BGP network performance characteristics. Chapter 4 elaborates on several strategy control techniques for BGP, including regular expressions, enhanced BGP policy filtering lists, route mapping, policy lists, and the order of filtering processing.
Part II and Part III introduce the design of enterprise and service provider BGP networks. The core of these parts, from Chapters 5 to 9, provides a detailed analysis of enterprise and operator BGP network designs, including various BGP architectures and their comparisons, enterprise network Internet connectivity, scalable iBGP design and implementation guidelines, route reflection and federation migration strategies, and service provider network architecture.
Part IV covers the implementation of BGP multi-protocol extensions. Chapters 10 to 12 of this part step beyond traditional BGP and expand on new applications of multi-protocol BGP in other fields, including MPLSVPN, inter-domain multicast, IPv6, and CLNS.
Part V is the appendix, providing materials closely related to the book's content. The book is well-structured, clearly explained, thoroughly analyzed, and equally emphasizes theory and practice. It not only delves into traditional BGP knowledge but also discusses new BGP features and new developments in IOS, making it highly suitable for ISP network administrators, BGP network designers and implementers, and readers who wish to delve deeper into BGP.
