Concise History of the Chinese Economy

Author: Zheng Xuemo, Editor-in-Chief
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2005-03-01
Features: The compilation of this book follows several principles: First, it focuses on several fundamental issues in economic history, such as ecological environment, economic resources, and economic zones, land tax and labor system, social classes and strata, fiscal system, agriculture, handicrafts, and commerce, totaling seven major sections. Some chapters also include content on social organization and social civilization, as well as economic perspectives. Each chapter aims for basic consistency in the aforementioned seven aspects, while content selection and emphasis may vary. The entire book is divided into ten chapters in chronological order, marked by major dynasties: the economy of primitive society, the economy of the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties, the economy of the Qin and Han dynasties, the economy of the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, the economy of the Sui, Tang, and Five Dynasties, the economy of the Song, Liao, Western Xia, and Jin periods, the economy of the Yuan dynasty, the economy of the Ming dynasty, the economy of the early and mid-Qing dynasty, and the economy of the late Qing and Republican period. Second, it is based on the research achievements of scholars in this field, incorporating the findings of peers to ensure the content aligns with the current state of academic research, demonstrating a certain level of advancement. Third, it adheres to the principle of "conciseness," striving for brevity in historical evidence citation, viewpoint analysis, and process summarization. We hope that compared to the previously published Comprehensive History of Chinese Economy by Hunan People's Publishing House and the Comprehensive History of Chinese Economy by Economic Daily Press, this book offers its own concise yet academically rigorous features, making it more suitable for undergraduate and graduate students in relevant disciplines, as well as economic and historical professionals.
