It is one of the series textbooks for the "Nineteen-Ninety-Five Plan" in Computer Science and Technology programs organized by the Teaching Guidance Committee for Computer Science and Technology of Higher Education Institutions under the Ministry of Education. The book is divided into four parts:
Part I (Chapters 1 and 2) introduces the basic composition, development, and applications of computers.
Part II (Chapters 3, 4, and 5) covers buses, memory (including main memory, cache, and auxiliary memory), and I/O systems.
Part III (Chapters 6, 7, and 8) discusses the characteristics, structure, and functions of the CPU, including the basic arithmetic and logic unit, instruction set, instruction pipelining, RISC technology, and interrupt systems.
Part IV (Chapters 9 and 10) introduces the functions and design concepts of the control unit, including the timing system and the design ideas and implementation measures for control units using combinational logic and microprogrammed design.
Each chapter is followed by exercises. The book is clear in concept and easy to understand, with examples closely tied to contemporary computers. It can serve as a textbook for computer majors in higher education institutions and also as a reference for other science and technology professionals.
