Features: This sociological collection, edited by professors Patricia Adler and Peter Adler, features contributions from 47 contemporary American sociologists. It enables readers to re-examine the world around them and change their perspectives on everyday life—this is what sociologists refer to as "sociological imagination." For sociology students, reading this collection can help them enter the field of sociology and deepen their understanding of sociological knowledge. For readers who have never encountered sociology before, it may help them re-examine the world around them and change their perspectives on everyday life—this is what sociologists call "sociological imagination." For sociology students, reading this collection can help them enter the field of sociology and deepen their understanding of sociological knowledge.
The book is divided into five parts. It reflects the authors' concerns about social issues in the United States and their empathy for the lower class and African Americans in the U.S. In times of significant change and development, the groups most likely to be overlooked and discriminated against are often vulnerable groups, including the lower class. The perspectives and interests of these individuals are rarely fully represented or expressed. Against this social backdrop, the authors show great care in selecting different ethnic groups for comparative analysis, demonstrating their concerns about social issues and their call for social justice. This in itself requires a certain amount of courage and conscience! In terms of the overall structure of the collection, the editors consistently adhere to a fundamental thread while maintaining coherence between the different parts. This ensures that the artificially divided chapters remain independent yet cohesive—exploring sociological imagination and the pursuit of truth in social behavior.
Of course, as a foreign sociology textbook, the book still carries a strong American flavor or Western perspective, with insufficient attention paid to other regions and societies in the world. When reading, it is necessary to compare and contrast the analyses and case studies presented with local contexts.
