Features: According to the authoritative book Teacher’s Word Book by Professor Thorndike of Columbia University in the United States, although English has over 700,000 words, 4,500 of them account for approximately 99% of the commonly used vocabulary in books, newspapers, and magazines. Among these, only around 3,000 are frequently used in spoken English. In other words, the high-frequency vocabulary used by English speakers in daily conversation is relatively limited and stable. Generally speaking, mastering over 3,000 words can help learners express themselves clearly. Therefore, the author has been thinking: if we can help English learners effectively master these approximately 3,000 basic spoken words while also grasping some high-frequency spoken verb phrases, then when speaking English, everyone will not only dare to speak because they have "something" in their minds but also speak more accurately, fluently, and confidently. This book is based on this purpose and uniquely selects over 3,000 English spoken words. The series consists of three levels, with three books in total, each targeting beginner, intermediate, and advanced English spoken learners, with about 1,000 high-frequency words and phrases per level. The series adheres to the principle of serving the general Chinese English learners, avoiding slang and distinguishing it from listening vocabulary. It focuses on the practical needs of speaking, emphasizing easy-to-learn and relatively stable words and phrases to effectively solve the problem of (opening one's mouth). Additionally, it maintains the internationality of the selected vocabulary, meaning that most of the over 3,000 words and phrases are high-frequency words commonly used by people in English-speaking countries. This book adopts a block-style layout, with example sentences being authentic and vivid spoken dialogues and sentences, accompanied by audio recordings, aiming to help readers solidly master these spoken words and phrases through flexible and lively methods. The main features of the series are as follows:
(1) It highlights the multiple uses of high-frequency words in spoken English, helping readers master each word flexibly and solidly.
(2) Based on the special requirements of using spoken vocabulary, it creatively emphasizes memorizing the correct pronunciation and usage of words as the primary focus, with spelling memorization as secondary, and provides some tips to help readers remember pronunciations.
(3) For the difficulties in using spoken vocabulary, the series adopts a learning method that connects with related Chinese usage, comparing synonyms, homophones, etc. This helps readers correct common errors in their spoken English and use the vocabulary more appropriately and accurately. The series has different memory requirements for the three books:
The first book requires readers to master all the vocabulary completely;
The second book requires flexible mastery while further consolidating the vocabulary learned in the first book;
The third book is divided into two levels: mastery and selective mastery.
We believe that through the study of these 3,000+ high-frequency spoken words and their usage in these three books, readers will be able to handle daily communication and lay a solid vocabulary foundation for further improvement in their spoken English skills.
